South Asia in World Politics

South Asia in World Politics
South Asia in World Politics offers a comprehensive introduction to the politics and international relations of South Asia, a key area encompassing the states of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. While U.S. interest has long been sporadic and reactive, 9/11 alerted Washington that paying only fitful attention to one of the world's most volatile and populous regions was a recipe for everyday instability, repeated international crises, major and minor wars, and conditions so chronically unsettled that they continue to provide a fertile breeding ground for transnational Islamic terrorism. Exploring the many facets of this dynamic region, the book also assesses U.S. policy toward Afghanistan and explains the importance of Bangladesh and Pakistan, two of only a handful of Islamic states with significant track records as democracies.

Religion and Ecology in India and South East Asia by David L. Gosling, X
Religion and Ecology in India and South East Asia by David L. Gosling, X
The resolution of the ecological problems facing the Indian sub-continent -- with its huge Himalayan land mass and large population -- and southeast Asia will be a major factor in whether life as we know it will survive beyond the early centuries of the new millennium. Religion and Ecology in India and Southeast Asia looks at the part the Hindu and Buddhist traditions could play in promoting more just and sustainable relationships between people and the natural world. The ecological potential of these traditions is considered both from a historical perspective, and in relation to their contemporary expressions. From this view of these traditions, transformations between the past and the present are shown to offer the most fertile possibilities for improvement. David L. Gosling's arguments are based on the extensive fieldwork he has carried out in the region and are framed by the sociopolitical context of religious change in India and southeast Asia, where it is maintained that the development-led analysis of Amartya Sen, with its emphasis on participative education, healthcare and a reduction of the gender imbalance, is a crucial prerequisite for social and environmental improvement. Though regional in scope, this is a study of global significance, considering the most urgent social and environmental problems of the new millennium.

Secularism (South Asia) - Some people argue that Secularism has a different meaning in South Asia than it does in other parts of the world. In South Asia, Right wing nationalists in most parts of South Asia consider that Secularism refers to a political group of people and think that Secularists in South Asia consist of only Communists.

Media bias in South Asia - Claims of Media bias in South Asia attract constant attention. The question of bias in South Asian media is also of great interest to people living outside of South Asia.

Alliance for a Secular and Democratic South Asia - The Alliance for a Secular and Democratic South Asia is a voluntary organization founded in the Boston area of North America by liberal South Asian expatriates seeking to combat sectarianism, pogroms and discrimination, and to promote Democratic reforms and the Separation of Church and State ("Secularism") in South Asia.

Coordination Committee of Maoist Parties and Organisations of South Asia - The Coordination Committee of Maoist Parties and Organizations of South Asia usually goes by its abbreviation, CCOMPOSA. As the name implies, it is an umbrella organization of various South Asian Maoist parties and movements and its purpose is to coordinate their activities throughout South Asia (as well as elsewhere as needed).
