Language Change: Progress or Decay? by Jean Aitchison,
This book gives a lucid and up-to-date overview of language change, discussing where our evidence about language change comes from, how and why changes happen, and how languages begin and end. It considers both changes that occurred long ago, and those currently in progress. This substantially revised third edition includes two new chapters on change of meaning and grammaticalization. New sections have been added to other chapters, as well as over 150 new references. The work remains nontechnical in style and accessible to the reader with no previous knowledge of linguistics.

Archaeology and Language IV: Language Change and Cultural Transformation
Archaeology and Language IV: Language Change and Cultural Transformation
This volume is the final part of a four-part survey of innovative results emerging from the fusion of archaeology and historical linguistics. Archaeology and Language IV examines a variety of pressing issues regarding linguistic and cultural change. It provides a challenging variety of case studies which demonstrate how global patterns of language distribution and change can be interwoven to produce a rich historical narrative, and fuel a radical rethinking of the conventional discourse of linguistics within archaeology.

Language change - Language change is the manner in which the phonetic, morphological, semantic, syntactic, and other features of a language are modified over time. It is the topic addressed by historical linguists, who look at the past states of a language and seek to explain how the present state came about.

Sound change - Sound change or phonetic change is a historical process of language change consisting in the replacement of one speech sound or, more generally, one phonetic feature by another in a given phonological environment. Sound change is supposed to be regular, which means that it should be expected to apply mechanically whenever its structural condition is met, irrespective of any non-phonological factors (such as the meaning of the words affected).

Language planning - Language planning refers to deliberate efforts to influence the behaviour of others with respect to the acquisition, structure, or functional allocation of language. Typically it will involve the development of goals, objectives and strategies to change the way language is used.

Language reform - Language reform is a kind of language planning by massive change to a language. The usual motives are simplification and purification.
