Anthropological Asia Bibliography South
Literary Culture in History by Sheldon I.Pollock, A grand synthesis of unprecedented scope, "Literary Cultures in History is the first comprehensive history of the rich literary traditions of South Asia. Together these traditions are unmatched in their combination of antiquity, continuity, and multicultural complexity, and are a unique resource for understanding the development of language and imagination over time. In this unparalleled volume, an international team of renowned scholars considers fifteen South Asian literary traditions--including Hindi, Indian-English, Persian, Sanskrit, Tibetan, and Urdu--in their full historical and cultural variety. The volume is united by a twofold theoretical aim: to understand South Asia by looking at it through the lens of its literary cultures and to rethink the practice of literary history by incorporating non-Western categories and processes. The questions these seventeen essays ask are accordingly broad, ranging from the character of cosmopolitan and vernacular traditions to the impact of colonialism and independence, indigenous literary and aesthetic theory, and modes of performance. A sophisticated assimilation of perspectives from experts in anthropology, political science, history, literary studies, and religion, the book makes a landmark contribution to historical cultural studies and to literary theory in addition to the new perspectives it offers on what literature has meant in South Asia.
Leveling Crowds: Ethno-Nationalist Conflicts and Collective Violence in South Asia by Stanley J. Tambiah, Ethno-nationalist conflicts are rampant today, causing immense human loss. Stanley J. Tambiah is concerned with the nature of the ethno-nationalist explosions that have disfigured so many regions of the world in recent years. He focuses primarily on collective violence in the form of civilian "riots" in South Asia, using selected instances in Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and India. He situates these riots in the larger political, economic, and religious contexts in which they took place and also examines the strategic actions and motivations of their principal agents. In applying a wide range of social theory to the problems of ethnic and religious violence, Tambiah pays close attention to the history and culture of the region. On one level this provocative book is a scrupulously detailed anthropological and historical study, but on another it is an attempt to understand the social and political changes needed for a more humane order, not just in South Asia, but throughout the world.
Secularism (South Asia) - Some people argue that Secularism has a different meaning in South Asia than it does in other parts of the world. In South Asia, Right wing nationalists in most parts of South Asia consider that Secularism refers to a political group of people and think that Secularists in South Asia consist of only Communists. Media bias in South Asia - Claims of Media bias in South Asia attract constant attention. The question of bias in South Asian media is also of great interest to people living outside of South Asia. Coordination Committee of Maoist Parties and Organisations of South Asia - The Coordination Committee of Maoist Parties and Organizations of South Asia usually goes by its abbreviation, CCOMPOSA. As the name implies, it is an umbrella organization of various South Asian Maoist parties and movements and its purpose is to coordinate their activities throughout South Asia (as well as elsewhere as needed). Alliance for a Secular and Democratic South Asia - The Alliance for a Secular and Democratic South Asia is a voluntary organization founded in the Boston area of North America by liberal South Asian expatriates seeking to combat sectarianism, pogroms and discrimination, and to promote Democratic reforms and the Separation of Church and State ("Secularism") in South Asia.
